Thirteen-year-old twins, Vismaya and Sanmaya, hailing from Thiruvallur drowned in the Kuttiyadi river on Sunday. The girls, students of Class 8 at Santhi Nikethan High School, Thiruvallur, lost their lives while they were bathing in the river.

They went missing in the river around 11.30 a.m. Though some local residents tried to rescue them, their efforts were in vain. Both the girls were declared dead by the district hospital authorities at Vadakara.

The tragedy left the entire village shaken as the girls were familiar faces in the region. Residents said the two were well aware of the flow of the river and its dangerous stretches.

A large number of people, including the twins’ teachers and friends, rushed to their house where their parents, Puthiyottil Sasi and Suma, were inconsolable. The bodies were handed over to the family after autopsy at the district hospital.
