The total electrification project initiated by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) achieved its target in Kozhikode district by facilitating 44,740 new connections during the 2016-17 fiscal. The year also witnessed the creation of 113-km high tension supply line and 37-km low-tension line, covering regions that were far off from the KSEB network.

KSEB officials said the installation of the required number of distribution transformers was one of the successful interventions made to streamline power supply in rural areas. Not less than 200 transformers were installed at select locations, mostly covering the hilly regions.

The commissioning of the Koombara electrical sub-station in 2016 was another measure that benefited around 7,000 consumers. It ensured uninterrupted power supply even in the remote and hilly areas of Kakkadampoyil, Koombara, Maranchatty, Koodaranhi, Urumi, Perumpilavu, and Poovaranthodu. The main beneficiaries were those from Koodaranhi panchayat.

The KSEB authorities pointed out that the linkage of the 220-kv Meppayur sub-station with double-circuit power line had benefited the entire north Kerala consumers. In addition, the commissioning of 33-kv sub-stations at Perambra and Feroke was done in time.

The constituency-level initiatives taken up by people’s representatives too accelerated the KSEB’s mission to achieve total electrification . Assembly constituencies gave top priority to listing detached tribal settlements and houses under below poverty line to cover them at the earliest. Of the new connections, 11,434 covered eligible BPL and APL families and anganwadis under various local self-government bodies.

“The main beneficiaries of the total electrification programme were the people of north Kerala, and that ultimately prompted the government to make a formal declaration of the achievement in Kozhikode on Monday,” KSEB Deputy Chief Engineer K.B. Swaminadhan said. Also, the district is leading in the effective implementation of the Restructured Accelerated Power Development aimed at attending to transmission loss, he added.
