The participants of ‘Manjadikkuru,’ a residential theatre camp for children, were tired after an activity-filled day. But a minute into a drums performance by Shaji Kallayi, the children shrugged off their fatigue so that they could dance off the evening.

The camp is organised by Red Youngs, Vellimadukunnu. Fifty participants from across the State and places such as Mumbai and Bangalore are participating in the camp, organised for the second consecutive year.

Film-maker and editor Vinod Sukumaran is the director for the six-day camp. Theatre and film personalities such as Hima Sankar, Anoop Chandran, A. Santhakumar, Sivadasan Poyilkavu, Manoj Narayanan, Satheesh K. Satheesh, Anumol, Lajna and Anilkumar Thiruvoth and Kathakali maestro Guru Chemmancheri Kunhiraman Nair are leading classes.

The day at the camp begins with a yoga session, after which the participants are trained in various theatre techniques. The skills acquired during the camp will be presented in the form of five short plays on the final day of the camp.

There will be a live performance every evening. Drummer Shaji Kallayi, Guru Chemmancheri and Kumar Vallikkunnu are among the daily performers. A live demonstration of the makeup and performance of a Theyyam by Sreejith Perambra on Thursday will be the highlight of the camp. A film festival featuring some of the best children’s movies from across the world is another attraction.
