The centenary celebrations of Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Meenchanda, one of the oldest government schools in Kozhikode district, will open on Friday.
M.K. Muneer, MLA, will officially open the celebrations of the school which is on the path of becoming a centre of excellence through the PRIDE project, which will also be launched during the celebrations.
A proclamation rally and an open canvas will be held on Wednesday to herald the celebrations. The teachers of the school who are retiring this year will be honoured on the occasion. The formal function will be followed by cultural progrmmes of the students and the alumni.
A major attraction of the day’s programmes will be the staging of a play, which had won first prize in the district school arts festival 30 years ago, by the same team that had performed it then, Headmistress Jeetha V.G. said.
Funds for development
Parent-Teacher Association president P.M. Suresh Babu said the State government had sanctioned ₹5 crore while Dr. Muneer had sanctioned ₹3 crore from the MLA’s fund for the development of the school. Besides, the Faisal and Shabana Foundation, which had a key role in turning Government Vocational Higher Secondary School at Nadakkavu into a centre of excellence, will be part of PRIDE (Project for Rapid Innovation and Development in Education).
Ms. Jeetha said the school had a unique biodiversity garden, dry land paddy cultivation and an elaborate medicinal and vegetable garden. The school boasts the first ever mathematics laboratory in the district, which is open for students from other schools as well to explore.
‘Door-to-Door School’ is a philanthropic venture of the students of the school. Around 10 well-trained students give home tuition to those children who are unable to come to the school.
