Writer Maina Umaiban has said that women can come up in life only if they get rid of their “slavish” mentality. “Women need to work hard with unusual patience and tolerance to gain absolute freedom,” she said.

Ms. Umaiban was inaugurating a women’s get-together organised as part of the centenary celebrations of the Kozhikode District Cooperative Bank on Sunday. “Our presence in the social sphere in itself is a mode of protest, as there is a tendency in society to scare away those women who come out of their homes and speak their mind,” Ms. Umaiban said, adding that women should recognise opportunities and exploit them.

District Cooperative Bank Employees’ Federation women’s wing convenor K. Shageela presided over the session.
