Rs.2.61 crore for Snehasparsham

Aid to be given to 750 renal patients

The Kozhikode district panchayat has collected a sum of Rs.2.61 crore for the first phase of the Snehasparsham project.

The amount was mobilised from the limits of the Kozhikode Corporation, Koyilandy municipality and the 41 grama panchayats under the seven blocks in the district, according to information presented at a meeting held at the chamber of the District Collector here on Friday.

Chelanoor block had been chosen as the best block panchayat for collecting Rs.49,12,730. Pandalayani and Balussery came second and third for collecting Rs.35,69,595 and Rs.25,10,110 respectively. Thalakulathoor grama panchayat came first among grama panchayats by mobilising Rs.10,51,755, the officials said.

The Kidney Patients Welfare Society of Kozhikode district panchayat has launched the Snehasparsham project for rehabilitation of renal patients. The funds for the project have been mobilised from individuals and organisations. Kudumbasree members, students, religious institutions, residents’ associations, local bodies, and philanthropists have considerably contributed to the fund.s A dedicated team of doctors, civil servants, teachers, politicians, pain and palliate volunteers, and social workers are engaged in the project.

Officials said that the project would be implemented in five phases. Financial support would be provided to 750 renal patients, including children, for peritoneal dialysis in the first phase.

The second phase involved organising early detection camps and awareness programmes at schools, colleges and residential colonies. Motivating people for organ donation was one of the major activities in the third phase.

Rehabilitation of kidney- transplanted patients and medical support was provided in the fourth phase of the project. The final phase was a proposal to set up a state-of-the-art hospital and a research centre, they said.
