The Zamorin’s Guruvayurappan College here was the venue for an inter-regional cultural meet on Wednesday. Members of a contingent from Sikkim, Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, and Manipur showcased the region’s folk dances. The programme was organised by the Folklore Club of the college in association with the National Service Scheme, National Cadet Corps, the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Youth Development, Nehru Yuva Kendra, and Kerala Folklore Academy.
The students of the college performed folk dances and songs of Kerala. “Bihu dance of Assam, Maroni dance of Sikkim, and other artforms performed to the accompaniment of folk instruments was a unique experience,” said Tanju Raghavan, head of the Department of Political Science of the college.
She said that the exchange programme also enabled interaction between the two groups. A member of the Assamese contingent rendered Aae mere watan ke logon towards the end, fostering the spirit of nationalism.
College principal P.C. Rethi Thampatty inaugurated the function. Ramesh, co-coordinator of the Nehru Yuva Kendra, spoke.
