Residents to take out march to Palora Hill

April 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - Kozhikode:

The Palora Hill Protection Committee members will take out a march to the Palora Hill on April 19 seeking the protection of the hillock from illegal earth mining and quarrying.

Committee leaders said hundreds of residents from Thalakkulathur panchayat would take part in the march, which would call upon the revenue authorities to immediately intervene in the issue.

A meeting of the residents in the area was held on Wednesday to plan the mode of protests and discuss launch of awareness campaigns for the public on the impact of reckless earth mining in the area. Members of the local bodies addressed the meet.

Jobish Thalakkulathur, chairman of the committee, said they had already submitted a memorandum to District Collector N. Prasanth seeking his intervention in the issue. “We are waiting for the enquiry he ordered into the issue,” he added.

In the memorandum to the Collector, the residents had complained that illegal mining in the area for facilitating private land development works was severely affecting the drinking water sources in the area.

They had alleged that the water level in wells was coming down every year, indicating a huge crisis in the days to come.
