The rural police have clamped prohibitory orders in the Vadakara, Chombala, and Edacherry police station limits in the district for a week beginning Tuesday in the wake of the second anniversary of the killing of the Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T.P. Chandrasekharan.
Chandrasekharan was hacked to death by a gang allegedly hired by a section of leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] at Onchiyam on May 4, 2012.
Besides, all political parties are also observing the anniversary of the police firing in Onchiyam on April 30, 1948, in which 10 persons were killed and several others were injured.
Yathish Chandra, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Vadakara, says the orders have been issued under Section 78 (regulation to prevent violence) and Section 79 (regulation of public assemblies) of the Kerala Police Act. It will be in force till May 5.
Mr. Chandra says the police have given permission to different political parties to carry out procession on Onchiyam Martyrs Day on April 30.
RalliesThe CPI (M), the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the RMP will observe the anniversary but their rallies will not meet one anothers'. A local peace meeting will also be held on the occasion.
A high-level meeting presided by Additional Director General of Police (North Zone) N. Shankar Reddy at Vadakara last week also decided to chalk out plans after the intelligence wing of the police gave a report that warned of a possibility of violence in the Onchiyam region.
The police have stepped up security in the rural belts. Special teams have been deployed to check the movement of vehicles coming from Kannur and Wayanad.
Patrolling has also been intensified. Squads will begin combing operation for explosives and other weapons, Mr. Chandra says.
