Kozhikode: The Rural police on Friday stepped up security at Kallachi and surrounding regions of Nadapuram which crude bomb explosions on Thursday night. The police said they had registered 30 cases against identifiable persons who might be involved in the incident in which four BJP workers suffered injuries.

Meanwhile, the BJP alleged that its activists were attacked by members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Steel bombs were hurled targeting party offices and shops owned by party workers, they alleged.

According to local leaders of the CPI(M), it was the BJP workers who triggered violence in the area by attacking a party office at Kallachi. They also dismissed the charge that CPI(M) workers were behind the hurling of crude bombs on BJP offices.

A senior police officer attached to the Vadakara rural police division said more policemen would be deployed in the area to prevent chances of counter-attack in the politically sensitive region. The frequency of night patrolling has already been increased to ensure better vigil, he added.

District Police Superintendent M.K. Pushkaran and Deputy Superintendent of Police Kuberan Nampoodiri visited the areas. Police sources said it was the attack against a local CPI(M) office at Kallachi that led to a series of late-night counter-attacks in the region.
