The Police Department conducted a successful trial run of the newly commissioned hi-tech surveillance vehicle in some of the crowded public places in the city on Monday.

The vehicle, equipped with high-end surveillance cameras and computer systems, will be used for monitoring traffic from remote locations and to ensure proper surveillance of crowded places.

Officials said the operations of the multi-purpose vehicle would be controlled directly by the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP)-North Zone. “Two policemen have already been trained to operate the vehicle,” they added.

V.K. Akbar, Superintendent of Police (North Zone Traffic), told The Hindu here on Monday that the vehicle would be used mainly for gathering visuals and images from remote locations, where policemen would not be able to reach quickly.

“We have modern cameras fitted in this vehicle, which have superior zooming capacity and memory to record hours of visuals for future references,” he said.

Mr. Akbar also said that the vehicle would be used for all surveillance programmes of the police to prevent crime. “The trial run we conducted in the city was successful and we are confident to tap its possibilities in the days to come,” he added.
