Plea to set up haemophilia centre

April 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:47 am IST - Kozhikode:

The Haemophilia Society, Kozhikode Chapter, has called upon the State government to take urgent steps to set up a haemophilia centre in Kozhikode, preferably at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH).

The society had organised a get-together of haemophilia patients and their families from Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram districts on Saturday as part of World Haemophilia Day (April 17).

Ajith Kumar, Professor of Paediatric Haematology at MCH, delivered a talk on detection of haemophilia.

The other demands of the society included free medicines to all haemophilia patients irrespective of their income and more facilities to detect carriers.

The newly elected secretary of the society, V.P. Sadiq, said there should be a separate ward for haemophilia patients at the MCH.

He said the medicines were quite costly and unavailable at Karunya pharmacies in government hospitals.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader P.S. Sreedharan Pillai inaugurated the get-together. Dr. Ajith Kumar was elected president of the society and Anupama, a medical doctor, elected the ‘key person’ at a general body meeting.
