Perumanna Panchayat turns ‘child-friendly’

January 01, 2014 12:23 pm | Updated May 13, 2016 06:34 am IST - Kozhikode:

The Perumanna grama panchayat has been declared the first ‘child-friendly’ village in the district.

Perumanna was given the title after it introduced a slew of child welfare measures encouraging grassroots enterprises, from anganwadis to madrassas, to work together as a unit. “Perumanna panchayat will serve as a model for other panchayats to allot separate funds for their children’s safety,” Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar said at a function held here on Tuesday to mark the panchayat’s achievement.

The panchayat worked together with Childline to implement the project by forming ward-level child protection committees. It conducted a door-to-door survey to record the number of children, their age, gender, status of immunisation and so on.

“We have finished the field work. We have to tabulate the data,” M.P. Mohammed Ali, district coordinator, Childline, said. The project will rope in personnel from Accredited Social Health Activist, Kudumbasree, anganwadis, school teachers, madrassas, Health Department, and panchayat staff.
