One-way traffic violations rampant

Police cite staff shortage; CCTV cameras not working

The one-way traffic regulations, now in place round-the-clock on different stretches of the National Highways 66 and 212 passing through the city, have been thrown to the wind by motorists with the declining night patrol.

Though there is no relaxation of the regulations at any time, some motorists believe they can skip the norms after 8 p.m.

N.V. Sameer, a mechanic in the city, says the violations are rampant at Nadakkavu, Mavoor Road and Pushpa Junction. “Unexpected entry of vehicles creates panic among the drivers who stick to the rules,” he adds.

Shop owners along the NHs say very few violators are being tracked now as closed-circuit television cameras too are not working in several locations.

When the police launched a special drive last year, 40 persons had been fined. However, the drive lost momentum following frequent shifting of the patrolling team for other duties.

A city traffic police officer said they were forced to reconsider the regular camping spots owing to staff shortage.

“Even amid the limitations, we strive to cover most of the identified locations during night and it has been found effective in curbing the violations to a great extent,” he claimed.
