The half an hour that the new Excise Commissioner spent with the budding generation proved right the common impression that today’s children were more or less detached from the world outside.
Lukewarm response
Excise Commissioner Rishiraj Singh posed several questions and shared his thoughts with the students of Government Vocational Higher Secondary School at Nadakkavu at an interactive session on Sunday, but the response from the students was lukewarm.
He said that drug abuse was on the rise among students and that there was no point in blaming teachers alone for the misbehaviour of the children. “The family has a role and a bigger responsibility in moulding the children,” he said.
He urged the children to come out of the social media or reduce time spent on computers and mobile phones so that they could interact well with their family and nurture the bonds.
Reading habit
Mr. Singh expressed his concern over the decreasing number of girls who go for higher education and the decline in reading habit.
The issue of underage driving also was brought up on the occasion.
Mr. Singh said that the parents were to blame for it since they were the ones handing over the vehicles to their minor children.
Principal of the school Sushama Jacob presided over the session. Roshan John, a representative of the Faizal and Shabana Foundation that renovated the school, Joint Commissioner of Excise R.V. Muralidharan, and Deputy Commissioner P.K. Suresh were present.
