Putting political differences aside, various political parties, merchants’ forums and youth organisations on Thursday joined together for a ‘Suchitwa Hartal’ in Nadapuram. They spent around four hours together on the streets in support of the panchayat’s plan to ban plastic carry bags from June 1.

Nadapuram and Kallachi towns observed the hartal which was kicked off by panchayat president M. Safeera. Chairpersons of various standing committees and ward members were present to support the cause.

“We had discussed plastic ban with all political parties and organisations, and the drive went off well, sending across the message to the people,” said Ms. Safeera. She said they would gradually move on to the Green Protocol concept which was successfully implemented in various parts of the State.

From June 1, plastic carry bags below 50 microns will not be permitted in any shops in Nadapuram panchayat limit. Those who want to use carry bags above 50 microns will have to obtain permit from the panchayat by remitting a fee of ₹4,000 per month.

Panchayat authorities said all the merchants’ organisations were in support of the idea of promoting environment-friendly and cheap carry bags. Steps will also be taken to train local Kudumbasree units in paper carry bag production and its supply to all the local shops.

Also, the panchayat’s waste recycling plant in Nadapuram, which was closed down following indefinite public protests, will not be reopened without addressing public concerns. Panchayat authorities have placed a request before the district administration to take up the issue and suggest a viable solution.

“Ahead of the next District Planning Committee meeting, we will come out with a special project that will suggest a scientific solution to address the waste treatment issues in the panchayat limit,” said Ms. Safeera. She also said the project outline would be ready by the end of this month.
