The Kozhikode District Motor and Engineering Workers Union will take out a march to the Collectorate on Friday demanding the withdrawal of the recent hike in motor vehicles tax and the premium amount of vehicle insurance policies offered by various private companies.
In a communication issued here, leaders of the organisation said that the tax revision would adversely affect the owners of taxi cabs and other commercial and private service vehicles. They alleged that the government planned to raise Rs.300 crore by revising the tax, they alleged.
T. Balan Nair, general secretary of the union, claimed that the motor workers would be forced to leave the field if the “unjust tax rule” was not withdrawn. He alleged an attempt on the part of the government to misuse the motor workers’ welfare fund without utilising it for the development of the intended segment.
