The Kannur University Staff Organisation (KUSO) has said that the sanctioning of more courses to colleges under pressure from college managements will adversely affect examination works and academic activities of the university.
In a press release, KUSO president Babu Chathoth and general secretary Jayan Chalil said that sanctioning new courses without creating additional posts of non-teaching staff in the university was deplorable.
Last year, 21 new courses were offered in 17 colleges under the university and nine courses in two new colleges. The government was yet to sanction a single non-teaching staff post to the university.
Following the introduction of the choice-based semester system in 2009, the annual examination system was replaced by semester examination which doubled the workload of university employees.
While other universities had been sanctioned additional non-teaching vacancies, the Kannur University was discriminated against, they said.
In the 2013-14 academic year, the six government and aided colleges affiliated to the university were sanctioned 21 new courses and self-financing colleges were given 81 new courses.
They also said that the government’s move to sanction 28 new courses in 14 colleges in the current academic year was against the university Act and statute.
They warned that the organisation would be forced to launch agitation if the news courses were sanctioned in violation of the Act and the statute.
