Hartal at Koyilandy total and peaceful

April 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - Kozhikode:

The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Koyilandy in the district on Friday was total and peaceful.

The hartal was called in protest against the assault on Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh Payyoli regional president A.K. Baiju reportedly by the Koyilandy police on Wednesday night.

Private bus services were affected on the Kozhikode-Koyilandy and Koyilandy-Vadakara routes.

However, the long-haul services and those on by-routes including Koyilandy-Ulliyeri operations were not affected. Commercial establishments and shops remained closed. Autorickshaws also kept off roads. Baiju, who sustained minor injuries, is recuperating at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. He is an autorickshaw driver at Payyoli town.

Protest

On Thursday, autorickshaw drivers took out a protest march at Payyoli.

BJP leaders said Baiju was assaulted by the police when he intervened in an accident case involving a KSRTC bus and a car at Payyoli.

It was alleged that the police had refused to register a case in connection with the accident.
