Governor Sathasivam for modernising legal system

January 05, 2015 11:47 am | Updated 11:47 am IST - Kozhikode:

It is time for the legal system of the country to be equipped to tackle the changing nature of crime, Governor P. Sathasivam has said.

He was delivering the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s first N.A. Palkhivala law lecture series started by the N.A. Palkhivala Academy for Advanced Legal Studies and Research on the Bhavan’s campus at Ramanattukara here on Sunday.

Technical knowledge

Talking on the topic ‘Challenges to Human Security in 21 century: A vision of crimes in future,’ Justice Sathasivam said that a consolidation of law with sophisticated technical knowledge was a must to thrive in the digital era. He said that in the next 20 years, “traditional” crime, as we know it today, would be replaced by cyber crimes.

Cyber crime

According to him, it was time for people to stop thinking of cyber crime as something that only happens on a computer. Another most worrying aspect of this he said was the likelihood of terrorists moving online and engaging in what was called cyber terrorism.

“Therefore, the legal system should be equipped both manually and intellectually to tackle the rapid technology development that will allow crimes to turn for the worse,” he said.
