After the heavy rain for the past few days, the city had a sunny day on Tuesday. However, five houses were damaged in rain-related incidents in Kozhikode on the day.

Official sources said that a house under construction collapsed at Palakkada, Puthiyangadi, in the city at noon. No casualties have been reported. The loss was estimated at Rs.6 lakh. Crops valued at Rs.6.64 lakh were destroyed on Tuesday. Most of these cultivated lands were at Ramanattukkara, Onchiyam, Ulliyeri, Kediyanoor and Arikkulam. The total area came to four hectares.

All the five houses that were damaged were in Kozhikode taluk. The damage was calculated at Rs.3.65 lakh.

The death toll in rain-related incidents this year has touched six so far. This included three in Vadakara taluk and two each in Koyilandy and Kozhikode taluks. The sunny weather provided some reprieve to several families residing in the low lying regions, as water drained away.

However, many areas received drizzles in the evening. Motorists and pedestrians had a tough time moving in the commercial streets.

Those residing in the vicinity of the Kakkayam dam and the Kuttiyadi river have been issued a warning following the heavy rain. The shutters of the dam would be opened in case of any possible occurrence of water levels rising in the reservoirs.
