Fisheries Minister J. Mercykutty Amma has said that the government will shift fishermen’s families under the Above Poverty Line category to Below Poverty Line. She was here to inaugurate a three-day ‘Matsyotsav’ aimed at helping fishermen.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister promised to address the primary needs of fishermen such as shelter, infrastructure, title deeds, and development of fishing harbours.

According to the stipulations fixed by the Centre, those who stay in houses spread across 1,000 sq ft could not be included in BPL category. Others could be included in the list.

Financial aid

Fishermen will be offered financial assistance to the tune of ₹4 lakh each to construct houses and ₹6 lakh each for buying land. Houses can be constructed within 180-metre radius of the coast, while steps will be taken to amend the law that stipulated a distance of 200 metres.

Ms. Mercykutty Amma said the Vellayil fishing harbour would be developed at a cost of ₹12.5 crore, and ₹14.5 crore will be spent on the Puthiyappa harbour. A sum of ₹5 crore will be set apart for the modernisation of the Chombal harbour.

Exhibition

An exhibition of ornamental fish, fish delicacies, and stalls showcasing modern and traditional fishing equipment is on at the venue.
