Film festival to create autism awareness

A film festival on autism began at Mananchira Square on Thursday as part of the Autism Week observance.

The festival, organised under the aegis of the Department of Social Justice and the Department of Information and Public Relations in association with Humanities Charitable Trust, Corporation of Specially abled, Rotary Club, and the Calicut Press Club, will be on till April 8.

Hindi film My Name is Khan , in which Shahrukh Khan enacts the role of an autistic person, was the inaugural movie at festival. Purushan Kadalundi, MLA, inaugurated the festival. Movies such as Forrest Gump , Mercury Rising , Black Baloon , Haridas , Barfi , and Rain man will be screened in the coming days.

A ‘Walk for Autism’ was held on Thursday. District Collector N. Prashanth flagged off the walk near the BEM Girls Higher Secondary School at Mananchira.

The Autism Week programmes began on Wednesday with Deputy Director of Public Relations T. Velayudhan inaugurating a mobile autism awareness exhibition at the Civil Station. A kite flying event under the aegis of the One India Kite Team was held on the Kozhikode Beach later.

Seminar

A seminar on autism will be held at the Rotary Hall at Chakorathkulam on April 7. Minister for Social Justice and Panchayats M.K. Muneer will inaugurate the seminar at 9.30 a.m.
