Stray incidents of violence were reported from the rural areas of Kozhikode district late Thursday and early Friday. The police had anticipated violence in the wake of the Special Additional Sessions Court (Marad cases) court, on Wednesday, delivering the verdict in the case of hacking to death Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T.P. Chandrasekharan at Onchiyam on May 4, 2012.
At least eight persons, including a woman, were injured in three incidents of violence reportedly involving activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI-M] and RMP at Valliyad in the Thiruvalloor and Eramala grama panchayats. Miscreants threw stones at some houses.
Yathish Chandra, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Vadakara, said four cases were registered at the Vadakara police station in this connection. An RMP worker and a CPI(M) activist were arrested. A motorbike used by the miscreants had also been seized.
Cases were registered under Sections 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 448 (house trespass), and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code. More police personnel had been deployed in the troubled areas. A manhunt was launched to nab the culprits at large, Mr. Chandra said.
The trouble started after a verbal duel between workers of the hostile parties at Valliyad over the acquittal of P. Mohanan, district secretariat member of the CPI(M). Subsequently, three CPI(M) workers were attacked in front of the Mathai Chacko Smaraka Mandiram and later at other places. Prohibitory orders at Nadapuram and Vadakara subdivisions would continue till Sunday.
