The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has decided to submit a detailed estimate to the Tourism Department for sanctioning a special fund to install Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at the Sarovaram Biopark.

An engineer will be assigned shortly to prepare the estimate as the DTPC has cleared the deck for the proposal taking into account the public complaints against the indecent behaviour of some of the visitors to the park and the destruction of its amenities.

District Collector N. Prasanth, who is also the chairman of the DTPC, had recently visited the park to take stock of the damaged facilities and hear the complaints of the security men posted there. The Collector had then promised prompt action, including the revamp of the facilities and installation of CCTV cameras.

First phase

An official of the DTPC said here on Monday that a total fund of Rs.57 lakh would be spent in the first phase for the overall makeover of the park. It would mainly include the renovation of a bridge connecting the park with the Kozhikode mini bypass road and the repairing of the damaged pedal boating point.

The proposal for CCTV cameras would be submitted as an additional estimate, he added.

There were a few CCTV cameras around the park a few years ago under the control of the city police. However, the surveillance system was removed later following objections from the corporation authorities who argued that it was an attempt to intrude into the privacy of people.

The project was reconsidered following a recent incident in which a youth manhandled one of the security men at the park for exposing his alleged indecent behaviour in the public.

The security guards at the park had later complained that they were facing threats from miscreants as the park had no surveillance mechanisms in place.
