The draft project proposals of the city Corporation for 2014-15, approved by the council on Friday, lays stress on public works development in the city.
The document included proposals to convert K.P. Kesava Menon Road, Cherootty Road, P.T. Usha Road, and Gandhi Road into model roads with facilities such as footpaths, drainage, and streetlights. LED lights would be installed at bus waiting sheds and major markets.
The proposals included renovation of the road between Neythukulangara and NH Bypass. A day care centre for the elderly would be built at Elathur. A mini-convention centre would be built at Kaippurathupalam. As much as Rs.2 lakh each would be set aside to build houses for the poor at the rate of two in each ward. Funds had been earmarked for the construction of Anganwadi buildings, the proposals said.
A sum of Rs.20 lakh had been set aside to renovate the fish markets at Naduvattom, Kovur, Kallai, Panniyankara, and Idiyangara.
A sum of Rs.49 lakh had been set aside for a domestic waste source treatment plant while Rs.18 lakh had been set aside to build a compound wall for the Kothi slaughterhouse.
Funds had been earmarked to build classrooms in various schools and the setting up of a library, the proposals said.
Welcome arches would be constructed at the boundaries of the Corporation. Parks at Malapparamba, Thadambattuthazham, Chettikulam, and Karuvassery would be renovated while Rs.20 lakh each had been set aside for 5 major libraries in the city. A sculpture park would be set up at the S.K. Pottekkat Cultural Centre at Puthiyara. Streetlights would be put up from Vattakkinar to Beypore.
The Opposition said roads had been chosen on the basis of which councillors represented the ward. K. Muhammadali of IUML said the proposals were election oriented.
The Opposition sought more focus on ‘neglected’ wards and more funds for the women’s hostel at Mankavu. The Opposition councillors suggested changes in the draft which would be submitted to the District Planning Committee for approval, source said.
