The distribution of saplings promised by the district administration to debutant voters under its ‘Orma Maram’ project was completed in the district on Wednesday.

Around 20,000 saplings collected from various nurseries of the Forest Department were given away to the young beneficiaries in the two-day drive formally inaugurated by District Collector N. Prasanth on Tuesday.

The support of over 100 Akshaya centres was ensured to complete the distribution. The saplings were handed over to those who produced the special slips earlier distributed by the district administration under the initiative.

Forest Department officials said the plants were collected from the department’s nurseries at Vattoli, Vengali, Kalleri and Madavoor. There were around 1, 28,000 debutant voters in the district. Majority of them collected plants from various other sources and planted it in memory of their first vote, they said.

Akshaya entrepreneurs said they had formed separate groups of volunteers to collect the saplings from various nurseries and distribute it through the Akshaya centres. There was huge response on the part of the voters and only high quality saplings were selected and distributed on the occasion, they said.
