The Corporation Council on Wednesday passed a resolution demanding the State government to cut down the recent hike in the power tariff, citing the huge losses it brought.
The resolution moved by T.P. Kunhimoideen said the people were already facing difficulties due to the scheduled as well as non-scheduled power cuts throughout the day, and the rise in power tariff came as a double shock. The power cuts, combined with the high tariff, were a drain on the pockets of common man and were leading to the ruin of small-scale industries, said Corporation Health standing committee chairperson Janamma Kunhunni.
M. Mohanan and M. Radhakrishnan stressed on the need for tapping alternative sources of power.
K. Muhammedali moved a resolution demanding proper rehabilitation of fish vendors in and around Vellayil in the city whose livelihood would be affected when the Vellayil fishing harbour became a reality. V. Sudheer demanded strict action against people who sunk unauthorised bore wells within the city limits.
O. Sadasivan called the attention of the council to the protest by the people in the areas through which the proposed high speed rail corridor would pass. The Mayor said that it was a problem that affected thousands of people. The council decided to inform government about people’s concern on the issue.
The council passed a 95-point agenda.
