Crimes on the rise

As many as 45 cases of serious crimes such as attempt to murder, hurling of bombs and rioting have been registered in Kannur district till April, this year. The figures were 158 in 2013; 300 in 2014; 268 in 2015; and 249 in 2016.

The number of first information reports (FIRs) registered in Kannur range has gone up to 1,17, 070 in 2016 from 83,991 in 2012. While the range witnessed 466 political clashes in 2013, the number was 676 in 2016.

As per records, the police personnel had to manage over 2,250 temple festivals between November 2016 and March 2017. About 300 personnel had to be deployed for prisoner escort on a daily basis.

The number of FIRs registered in Thrissur range in 2010 was 57,135 while in 2016, it was 1,29,694. Likewise, the number of petitions received in 2010 was 38,203, and in 2016, it was 82, 667.
