The council meeting of the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation on Tuesday turned into a noisy affair after the Mayor restricted permission of an adjournment motion by councillor P. Kishenchand.
The permission was denied on grounds that the issue was not serious enough to be presented as an adjournment motion. The opposition alleged that the ruling front was evading the questions that would be raised once the motion, which was on the Corporation not spending even half of its plan fund, was presented.
Permission granted to another adjournment motion by V.K. Mohandas further irked the opposition and it staged a walk out.
Later, the council unanimously passed a resolution to take up the issue of spread of epidemics with the State government. The motion presented by Mr. Mohandas said the Corporation was forced to take out all pre-monsoon cleaning on its own since the fund sanctioned by the National Urban Health Mission and the State Suchitwa Mission still remained on paper.
But the opposition had a different take on the issue. It said the rat poison packets distributed by the Corporation Health Department were past their expiry date and that it was of no use.
Pre-monsoon cleaningHealth Standing Committee Chairperson Janamma Kunhunni urged the councillors to ensure enough human labour as well, if the works were to be taken up properly. Deputy Mayor P.T. Abdul Latheef promised to allot funds to repair all vehicles of the Health Department. Mayor A.K. Premajam said the post of Health Officer was vacant and that the issue would be brought to the notice of the MLAs from the district.
Councillor M. Radhakrishnan Master presented a motion requesting the State government to take over the Malapparamba AUP School that was recently reconstructed through public intervention.
Councillor O. Sadasiva requested the Irrigation Department to construct a road along the Kuttiyadi Irrigation Canal in his ward. T.P. Koya Moideen demanded to check the issue of admission being stopped at Model ITI. M. Sreedharan demanded that a bridge, which was posing danger to motorists in his ward be rebuilt immediately.
