Corpn. seeks public’s help in harvesting water

May 05, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - Kozhikode:

The severe drought has awakened thoughts of harvesting rain water in the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation too.

The Corporation has sent out a call to the public to take steps to prevent such drought in the future as well as to take part actively in the pre-monsoon drive.

Deputy Mayor Meera Darshak, acting in place of Mayor V.K.C. Mammad Koya who is busy campaigning in Beypore, has urged voluntary organisations, residents associations and general public to help prepare the city to ward off future drought by setting up rain water harvesting equipment and by planting more saplings, thus protecting the environment.

The call is also to prepare for the possibilities of rain-borne diseases after the drought. As part of the pre-monsoon cleanliness drive, the Corporation has started de-silting the drainages in all wards.

This is to prevent accumulation of dirty water in the drains and also to prevent water logging during the rainy season.

There have been complaints in the previous years that the workers who de-silt the drains often leave the silt on the sides of the drains as a result of which, it washes into the drain with the first rain. The Deputy Mayor has sought the help of the residents associations in disposing the silt effectively.
