The Kozhikode Principal Munsif Court has appointed an Advocate Commission to inquire and submit a report on a complaint seeking to prevent the Indian Coast Guard from constructing a staff quarters on its land near Kattuvayal Colony in Ashokapuram in the city.

The court also issued notices to the Director General (New Delhi) and the Commanding Officer (Beypore, Kozhikode) of the Indian Coast Guard in this regard.

The case has been posted for further hearing on January 9.

The Coast Guard proposed to construct a staff quarters on the 1.06-acre land it had bought from the Calicut Development Authority (CDA) at Rs.10 crore a few years ago.

Petition

The petition was filed by the CDA Ground Protection Committee Chairman K.P. Vijayakumar, convenor K.T. Aravindakshan, who are spearheading an agitation against the Coast Guard proposal.

Counsels for the petitioners, N.K. Rajan and C. Ullas said that the land proposed for constructing the staff quarters had been earlier used as a playground by the local residents.

Besides, they also contented that the plot had been a paddy field once and that if a building came up in the plot, the neighbourhood, especially the Kattuvayal colony, would be flooded during the rainy season.

Residents have been protesting against the proposal of the Indian Coast Guard to even fence this plot.

An attempt to fence the land before commencing construction work was opposed by neighbourhood groups. They had also formed a human chain from Nadakkavu Junction to English Church.
