The four-day valedictory summit of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Muslim Educational Society (MES) came to a close with a massive cultural procession and a public meeting here on Sunday.
Thousands of people participated in the procession featuring around 100 floats depicting the contributions of the MES to the country in various fields ever since its foundation five decades ago.
The procession began from the Kozhikode Beach and was led by senior leaders of the society, including president P.A. Fazal Gafoor and general secretary P.O.J. Labba. Accompanied by band troupes, scouts, and roller skaters, the procession had floats dealing with history, culture, religion, education, science, medicine, art, literature, and nationalism.
Almost all the educational and cultural institutions under the society in different parts of the State had separate spots. Floats conveying the importance given by the movement for the education and empowerment of Muslim women were a highlight of the rally. Students, teachers, staff members of various institutions under the society, and the general public were part of the rally, which concluded at the Muthalakkulam grounds 6.30 p.m. after covering all the important roads in the city.
Abdul Bari Siddiqui, Leader of the Opposition, Bihar Legislative Assembly, inaugurated the public meeting in the evening. Mr. Sidhiqui praised the religious harmony maintained by the State even during troubled times. “That is the greatest strength of the State besides its education,” he said.
Mr. Gafoor presided over the function. Mr. Labba and All India Majilis-e-Mushawrat vice-president M.P. Mohammed Adeeb spoke.
