Five workers at the construction site of a house at the Halwa Bazar near Valiyangadi had a close shave when the staircase room of the building unexpectedly collapsed in the heavy rain here on Monday.

The incident took place just minutes after the workers jumped out of the building on hearing a strange noise. Only the construction labourers were present at the site during the incident that occurred around 11.30 a.m.

Fire and Rescue Service officials and the Revenue team visited the location and examined in detail the engineering plans and the mode of building construction as part of the procedures to list it as a rain-related damage.

As per the initial reports, it was the incessant rain that caused much of the damage. The bricks were drenched in excess and slowly led to the collapse.

The first floor and part of the ground floor were also damaged in the incident.
