: The Nallalam police have registered a case against Kozhikode District Congress Committee (DCC) president K.C. Abu on the charge of inciting communal passions at an election rally.

Election Officer’s directive

The police said a case had been registered against Mr. Abu under Section 125 (Promoting enmity between classes in connection with election) of the Representation of the People Act. This was on the basis of a directive from the District Election Officer.

Candidate files complaint

Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Prakash Babu, who is contesting from Beypore, had filed complaints with the Election Commission and at the police station regarding the controversial speech by Mr. Abu at a rally in the constituency.

The Election Commission had also sought an explanation from the Congress leader.

In his speech, Mr. Abu had said that if the UDF candidate, Adam Mulsi, was elected from Beypore, the people would get a Muslim legislator as well as retain a Muslim Mayor.

Kozhikode Mayor V.K.C. Mammed Koya is the LDF candidate in Beypore segment. What Mr. Abu meant was that if Mr. Koya was defeated, he would continue as Mayor.
