A general body meeting of the Calicut Bar Association, on Friday, witnessed stormy scenes following an argument over the recent suspension of a woman lawyer in connection with her controversial Facebook post.

Ruckus began when Anima Muyarathu, who made the controversial post, declined to make a public apology on the issue and reportedly scoffed at the stance taken by the Bar association on the Facebook comment. Some of the persons who attended the meeting got up from their seats and threw a chair at the woman.

Tension prevailed in the area as some of the lawyers came in support of Ms. Muyarathu and locked horns with her opponents in the meeting. A senior lawyer suffered minor injuries in the unexpected clash.

For legal fight

Speaking to the media later, Ms. Muyarathu said she would fight legally against the issue. She also claimed that “it was a case of harassment at the workplace.” Meanwhile, Bar association leaders clarified that the suspension was made as per the bylaw of the association. It was approved by the general body on Friday, they said.

It was on October 25, 2013, that the woman lawyer made the Facebook post in which she allegedly made some “defamatory comments” against her male colleagues. Office-bearers of the association said they had served two show-cause notices on the junior lawyer on the issue, but she failed to give any satisfactory reply.
