The eighth State convention of the BSNL Employees Union got off here on Wednesday with a call to resist the neo-liberal policies of the Union government,

Inaugurating the three-day meet, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) president A.K. Padmanabhan said it was high time labour unions put up a united fight against the growing social and economic inequalities in the country in the wake of the neo-liberal policies. Inequality was emerging as the biggest threat to society hampering the peaceful co-existence of people and there were concerted efforts to demoralise the labourers who raised their voice against this, he said.

Leaders of the BSNL Employees Union, who addressed the convention, said the meet had a huge significance in the wake of the continuing attempts to weaken the public sector undertaking with the entry of private communication giants. The establishment is going through a serious crisis with the steep fall in its annual revenue and the diminishing resources with the unsupportive policies of the government, they said.

Union State president A.V. Kuriakose chaired the inaugural function. Union’s all India patron V.A.N. Nampoothiri, State secretary K. Mohanan and general convener K.V. Jayarajan were present.
