The walkway on Kozhikode beach is a tale of missing tiles these days.

Constructed a few years ago as part of the beach beautification, the walkway was perfect with interlocked tiles, inbuilt granite paved seating arrangements, lamp poles and greenery in between. It has been a popular jogging venue since then.

However, now the walkway is a picture of neglect, with tiles missing at several places and broken granite slabs. At some places, the tiles have caved in. The remaining have slid away from their positions making the walkway uneven. This has been bothering morning walkers for quite some time, who find the straight half-a-km walkway by the sea perfect for their outing.

Besides, most of the lamp poles are rusted and may break down any moment.

P.G. Rajeev, secretary of the District Tourism Promotion Council, said repair works on the beach are carried out by the Department of Harbour Engineering. He said the department had been asked to prepare an estimate for the development of a cafeteria and toilet block on the beach.

The repair of the walkway would also be included in it, he said.

The department has prepared an estimate of Rs.20 lakh for repair of the walkway as well as roofing of two buildings on the Kappad beach.
