Reiterating the State government’s decision to take over the Pariyaram Co-operative Medical College, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the takeover was part of a larger move to have a medical college in every district in the State.

Mr. Chandy’s confirmation here comes a few days after a Cabinet decision to assume control of the college despite financial liabilities attached. The inclusion of Ernakulam Co-operative Medical College and the Pariyaram medical college in the government sector would realise long-term plans to have at least 10 medical colleges under the public sector, he said, during his speech inaugurating new cancer treatment facilities at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital here on Thursday. Mr. Chandy that the medical college in Manjeri had started functioning and work on seven other medical colleges was progressing in various districts.

He noted that the only district currently without a medical college of its own is Kollam, and assured that the government would take urgent steps to remedy this.
