The conversion of all police stations within the Kozhikode Rural police district limits to Janamaithri stations, as directed by the Home Department, has been completed.

Transport Minister A.K. Saseendran made the formal announcement in this regard at an event held at Vadakara Municipal Town Hall on Friday.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Saseendran said community policing should be a tool to maintain better relations with the public and to win their cooperation for effective law enforcement activities. “We will be able to counter criticism only by improving performance,” the Minister said.

C.K. Nanu, MLA, chaired the inaugural event. E.K. Vijayan, MLA, District Police Chief (Kozhikode Rural) M.K. Pushkaran and beat officers of various community police stations were present.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Narcotic Cell) A.P. Chandran, who is the nodal officer of Janamaithri Suraksha schemes, said all the 21 police stations in Kozhikode Rural area have been covered under the scheme. “The scheme has been operational in 14 stations since 2010. With the addition of seven more stations, the Janamaithri network is now complete in rural areas,” he added.

The seven new units added to the community policing network include the police stations at Edachery, Chombala, Atholi, Peruvannamoozhi, Koorachundu, Kakkur and Mukkom. They will soon get beat officers and assistant beat officers to coordinate the activities.

A seminar on the benefits of community policing initiatives was held. Resource persons from Police, Excise and Motor Vehicles Departments coordinated the sessions.
