An action committee of local residents in Vadakara, formed after an 18-year-old girl reportedly suffered a paralysis following an overdose of injection administered by a doctor at a private hospital in the town, has asked the government to order an inquiry into the case of alleged medical negligence.
Action committee chairman K. Kalajith told reporters here on Saturday that the government should take steps to ensure that proper compensation was paid to the girl. He demanded that the police arrest the doctor and withdraw the cases registered against local residents who have been accused of assaulting the doctor and destroying hospital properties. The police recently registered a case against the doctor, the resident medical officer of the hospital.
IMA’s claim
“The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has claimed that the doctor was abducted and taken in an ambulance. Seven police officers were on the premises when the doctor accompanied us in the ambulance. If it was an abduction bid, why was action not taken,” he asked.
Also, it had been alleged that the abduction bid happened on April 23. But the case was registered only two days later. Mr. Kalajith said the District and Sessions Court, Kozhikode, on Friday granted anticipatory bail to five persons against whom cases had been filed.
He alleged that the members of the IMA in Kerala were thwarting any attempt to ensure treatment to the girl and she had been taken to Tamil Nadu now.
He said the committee would stage a token ‘satyagraha’ in front of the hospital from May 19 and start an indefinite strike if justice was denied to the girl.
