Students belonging to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) boycotted classes in various colleges under the Vadakara taluk on Monday, seeking a fair inquiry into the death of a student of the Malabar Higher Education Society (MHES) College.
The student organisation leaders alleged that Ashina, a second year degree student of the college, had committed suicide following a ragging attempt by senior students. The management was aware of the issue, but they failed to take prompt action, they alleged.
Classes were interrupted in several colleges in Vadakara taluk as protestors took out marches and staged open protests in front of various campuses.
They also demanded that the police conduct a thorough inquiry into the incidents of ragging reported on the campus and initiate action against those involved in the incidents.
SFI protest
A few days ago, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) workers had also taken out a protest march to the MHES campus, demanding a fair inquiry into the incident. During the protest, the activists pelted stones at the college building.
Twelve SFI activists were booked in connection with the incident.
On Saturday, Excise Minister T.P. Ramakrishnan had visited Ashina’s house and promised the family that legal action would be initiated. The Minister had also directed the Superintendent of Police (Kozhikode Rural) to oversee the investigation.
Various youth organisations, including the Youth Congress and Muslim Students Federation, had organised a series of protests in the region.
