A large number of old students showed up for ‘CLC 1970’, a reunion of the first batch of Government Law College, Kozhikode, organised here on Sunday.

They were the first group of students to gain the LL.B degree of Calicut University and the first batch of the first law college in the Malabar region.

M. Krishnan Nair was the first principal of the college which started functioning in 1970, from the Model Government High School near Mananchira with moderate facilities. The college has since been shifted to Vellimadukunnu after a new building was built there.

Mayor Thottathil Raveendran opened the event in which retired teachers M. Ramakrishnan, M.V. Prabhakaran and Pauline Rose Mathai were present.

It was a walk down memory lane for the group. The last reunion was held in October, 2016 and earlier in 2007. “The golden jubilee of the college will be celebrated in 2020,” said CLC 1970 convener Vittal Das.

The first batch of students of the college includes persons who have earned a name for themselves in the legal field and many other walks of life.

While Justices R. Basant, M.N. Krishnan and M.C. Hari Rani retired as judges of the Kerala High Court, M. S. Fathima Beevi was judge of family court, V.P. Venugopal a magistrate, K. Thangam a government pleader and Rita Unnikrishnan the principal of Government Law Colleges at Thrissur and Ernakulam.
