A bus stand made of bottles and tyres

For those who are wondering how to dispose of used plastic bottles, vehicles tyres and such, the Kozhikode Chapter of Junior Chamber International (JCI) has shown the way. The dilapidated old bus stop in front of the old Corporation Office in Kozhikode has been replaced by a smart bus stop made of recycled material. Moreover, it is powered by Sun.

The venture was taken up by JCI Calicut as part of its golden jubilee celebrations, in association with Kalyan Kendra. It had sent out a call among members to contribute waste bottles and tyres. The members had put in a fortnight long effort to bring up the structure. The surroundings have been developed on the lines of a park.

Around 50 tyres have been used to frame the border of the plot with saplings planted within them. Around 1000 bottles have been filled with sand to be used instead of bricks for the front part of the compound wall. The bus stand structure has been built out of the granite bricks of the earlier bus stop and a few hollow bricks. Treated bamboo poles have been used as lamp posts where the solar lamps have been put up. The premises have been converted into a lawn with a brick walkway that leads into the canopied area behind the structure.

“The structure is strong. Arrangements have been made to water the plants”, said Ayna Tamton, President of JCI Calicut.
