The Health Department has closed down two restaurants in the district after raids were conducted on restaurants, hotels, cool bars, bakeries, catering units, and hostels as part of the ‘Healthy Kerala’ initiative.
As many as 1,338 such units were raided and 80 were served notices. A sum of ₹14,100 was collected from hotels and other units as fine for violating anti-smoking provisions. V. Jayashree, District Medical Officer, said in a press release on Tuesday that action would be taken against hotels which operate in unhygienic circumstances, resulting in breeding of mosquitoes.
Meanwhile, the DMO said that those selling fruit juice and other beverages, people organising feasts in connection with weddings and other mass gatherings, and those selling drinking water should be careful about the quality of water. Action would be taken under the Public Health Act against any lapses, she said.
It had been noted that water resources such as ponds and wells were being polluted with bathing and washing of clothes near them or discharge of pesticides from farms and effluents from industrial units. In some places, even human excreta were found to have been discharged into water resources.
