The Detective Department of the Kolkata Police on Friday arrested two Jadavpur University students for molestation of a female student. The incident on August 28 had triggered the students’ protests in the University.

Pallab Kanti Ghosh, Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police (Crime), told The Hindu that two students have been arrested on the charge of outraging the modesty of the girl student. They will be produced before a city court on Saturday.

On September 17, when the police used force against the protesting students, they were demanding fair probe into the molestation incident. The police crack down further infuriated the students who intensified the agitation.

‘Insensitive authorities’

The University authorities did not show enough sensitivity as they should have, the new probe committee formed by the West Bengal Government has found out.

“The University authorities were not as sensitive as they should have been and didn’t take action promptly,” a member of the committee told The Hindu .

The security measures recently announced by the University to regulate entry into the campus did not go down well with teachers as well as non-teaching members. They staged separate demonstrations on the campus against the decision to lock a gate. The gate was later opened by authorities.

Meanwhile, in a recently-published report, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council has awarded Jadavpur University with top spot among universities in the country. According to the report, the University received an A grade and scored 3.68 points in the cumulative grade point average.

“Jadavpur’s excellent NAAC rating was achieved against the odds through the incredible dedication and energy shown by members of the JU NAAC team… but also through the commitment, leadership and vision of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Siddhartha Datta. The V-C himself was largely absent during the preparations and the exercise itself. I am sad today that the Pro-V-C should have been the one to step down,” said Supriya Chaudhuri, a faculty member of the English department.
