: Amidst allegations that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is resorting to intimidation of candidates of Opposition parties, the State’s ruling party is all set to secure majority in at least three civic bodies without any contest.
In the municipal bodies of Tarakeshwar and Arambagh in Hooghly district and Gayeshpur in Nadia district in majority of wards, only candidates of the ruling party are in the electoral fray giving the TMC a virtual victory even before the polls are held. The candidates of Opposition parties have withdrawn their candidature at the eleventh hour providing an edge to the ruling party.
State BJP president Rahul Sinha met West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi alleging that TMC is pressurizing BJP candidates from several constituencies to withdraw their nominations. “The police is inactive and has even sided with the ruling party, while the State Election Commission watched helplessly,” he told journalists after meeting the Governor.
Sudarshan Roy Chowdhury, secretary of the Hooghly District Committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist), said that the candidates from Opposition are not getting any help from police.
