At least 10 persons were injured during a rail blockade when a train allegedly "tried to run over protesting students" in a south Kolkata suburban railway line.
The blockade was held by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), youth wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
The incident took place at the Jadavpur Station in the southern part of the city. However, the Eastern Railways authorities denied the allegation. The DYFI leadership alleged that the train driver deliberately tried to run over the agitators.
“We were peacefully staging then rail blockade at Jadavpur Station and at around 11.30 a.m. a train driver tried to run them over. Ten of our supporters were injured and four of them are in a critical condition,” DYFI State president Sayandip Mitra told The Hindu .
He also said that they have lodged a complaint. Eastern Railway spokesperson R.N. Mahapatra denied the allegation and said that the driver never tried run over the protesters.
“There was no attempt by the driver to run over the protesters. Some of the protesters were sitting on the down line after the agitation was lifted. A train came in the up line and one of the protesters went too close to the train. He was injured in a grazing collision,” he said.
