Saradha scam suspects portrayed as saints: Mamata

September 13, 2014 10:32 am | Updated 10:32 am IST - Kolkata:

Cornered by allegations of the involvement of Trinamool Congress leaders in the Saradha scam, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee defended her party on Friday saying that no one can malign its image.

“We are the one who arrested the culprits, set up a commission to return money of the depositors and returned money to five lakh depositors,” she said in an interview to a private television channel.

Referring to allegations levelled against her by those behind bars, she said suspects are being portrayed as “saints” although there was no evidence to back up their wild charges.

Her remarks were directed at suspended Trinamool MP Kunal Ghosh who had urged before court that Ms Banerjee along with Saradha group chairman Sudipta Sen be questioned by the CBI in his presence. “He had wronged so we took action against him”, she said.

Meanwhile, during the day Mr Ghosh told a city court that chit fund companies had funded an event organised by State’s Education Minister and senior Trinamool leader Partha Chatterjee.
