West Bengal BJP women’s wing president and actor Roopa Ganguly was injured in an attack allegedly by Trinamool Congress activists in the Kakdwip subdivision of South 24 Parganas on Sunday.

Ms. Ganguly and a group of BJP leaders had visited Kakdwip to meet a woman party worker, who was injured during the post-poll violence.

The team was accompanying the female worker to her village when the attack took place. The actor-politician sustained head and back injuries.

Ms. Ganguly had lost to Trinamool candidate and cricketer Laxmi Ratan Shukla from the Howrah Uttar seat in the Assembly elections.

“The women were beaten up severely. We were going to rehabilitate our party activist who was attacked earlier,” said Ms. Ganguly. She added: “They attacked us with bricks, flung us to the ground, tore our clothes and beat us. It was a well-planned attack. We are still traumatised.” She complained that the police were “completely inactive” when the assault took place.

BJP South 24 Parganas president Abhijeet Das was present with Ms. Ganguly when they were attacked.

“Trinamool activists attacked us after we left the hospital. All of us were targeted with sticks,” Mr. Das told The Hindu .

West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh said the Trinamool was carrying out such attacks to ensure an Opposition-free Bengal. Mr. Ghosh cautioned that, if required, the BJP would give a “fitting reply” to such attacks.

“We will boycott the swearing-in of the new government and call it a black day. We will urge the Centre not to send any representative for the ceremony,” said Mr. Ghosh.

On the other hand, Trinamool MLA from Kakdwip, Manturam Pakhira, said: “My party is not even remotely related to the attack on Ms. Ganguly.” The attack on the BJP worker earlier was the result of a family dispute, he said.
